Many immigrants pay Social Security, don’t collect

Critics say illegal immigrants are putting a burden on our public health care and education systems, but others point to the contributions that are also being made.

Some experts say some immigrants are working hard to pay their fair share.

It’s estimated there are as many as 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., and according to the Pew Hispanic Center, 7 million of them are employed, representing nearly five percent of the workforce.

Undocumented immigrants who apply for tax identification numbers are eligible to file for returns. Some, on the other hand, use fake Social Security numbers.

So they are working and taxes are being taken out, Social Security and Medicare holdings and many times they don’t file. So this money is going into Social Security and may be uncollected,” said Delia Mata, IRS Tax Specialist
