productivity tip: stop checking your email

Darren Rowse, of ProBlogger fame, has posted a productivity tip to help the overworked masses: “Turn down the frequency with which your email platform checks your email.” Why?

Until today I had Entourage checking for new email every 4 minutes – all day long. That meant ever four minutes my concentration was broken and a potential distraction from the task at hand entered my life with a lovely chime and pop up on my screen notifying me of the incoming email/s. Due to the volume of email that I get there was usually at least one email every 4 minutes.

Wow. I never thought about it it, but that does make sense. I stop what I’m doing every time my email application tells me there’s new mail. And, yes, that is every few minutes. No wonder I don’t get anything done.

I’m going to try this and see what happens.
